First Holy Communion Also prepares candidates for First Holy Confession Mrs. Frances T. Toups, Coordinator Email: ftoups@ololcatholic.com
Although most children make their First Holy Confession and First Holy Communion in 2nd grade, it is not unusual for an older child to enroll in the sacramental preparation program. Please call the office (937-6888) if you have any questions regarding our sacramental programs.
Our guidelines stipulate that sacramental preparation for First Holy Communion at Our Lady of Lourdes requires at least two (2) consecutive years of religious education. Attendance at all on-site classes and parent meetings is mandatory during First Holy Communion Years 1 and 2. Regarding absences: A doctor's excuse is required when a candidate is absent from an on-site class. After meeting/speaking with the parents, the pastor to determine whether a make-up class will be scheduled.
Year 1: Regardless of a child's age, a first-year candidate must register in his/her current religious education grade level, complete all work in the K-5 home-study textbook with a parent/guardian, and attend all scheduled on-site Sunday Sessions during Year 1 of his/her candidacy. The child must sign in weekly for Sunday Mass if a Year 1 sign-in sheet is provided. Older children must participate in the religious education program that is appropriate for their age group. If the child was not baptized here at Our Lady of Lourdes, the parent will have to obtain and submit a current, certified certificate of Holy Baptism for our files.
Year 2: Regardless of a child's age, a second-year candidate must register in the religious education program appropriate for his/her age group, attend all scheduled Thursday evening sacramental preparation classes and all scheduled Sunday Sessions, and sign in for Sunday Holy Mass throughout his/her second year of sacramental preparation. If the child was not baptized here at Our Lady of Lourdes, the parent will have to obtain and submit a current, certified certificate of Holy Baptism for our files.
Parents of a First Holy Communion candidate are expected to attend scheduled parent meetings during both years of sacramental preparation. This is done in accordance with guidelines from the Diocese of Lafayette which mandates that parents review the Church's teachings regarding the Sacraments of Holy Confession and Holy Communion and take an active role in the child's preparation. As stated before, the development of our faith is a never-ending process, and Catholic parents should always be willing to refresh their knowledge and develop a further understanding of these most holy sacraments. |
