Welcome to Catholic Community
To those who can only visit our faith community through this website: Welcome to Cajun Country! We are a hardy people who laugh together in good times, console and support each other in the midst of tragedy, shake off the dust of fear and uncertainty, and move forward as we share God's amazing love with everyone we meet.
The residents of South Louisiana are well aware of the potential wind damage and flooding that hurricanes can bring into our coastal areas, and after decades of relatively slow hurricane seasons, we were amazed and overwhelmed by Hurricane Rita's tidal surge in September 2005 and literally found ourselves in survival mode for weeks. Through months and, in some cases, years of recovery, we have prayed that all of our families and friends would have been able to experience God's presence in those who have offered their support, shelter, and best wishes. Now, better prepared to receive surge from "local" storms, we've grown accustomed to lifting furniture and appliances before we evacuate to higher ground, but we weren't sure what to expect from Hurricane Ike. Even though he made landfall approximately 250 miles away in Galveston, TX (September 2008), his tidal surge inundated our town and neighboring communities to the east and south of us! Generally speaking, because many of our residents have lifted their homes since Rita's visit to our community, Ike's surge wasn't as destructive as Rita's surge. However, for those residents who have not yet had the opportunity to lift their homes and suffered flood damage once again, Ike left costly repairs in his wake. We pray that God's guiding light will continue to shine so brightly in our lives that we will see Him even in our gloomy moods, red-tape confusion and frustration, and the manual labor we will encounter as we rebuild our homes, lives, and community. May God bless and protect everyone in our area and grant us the patience, courage, strength, and stamina we will need to get through another storm recovery. As always, we are grateful for the massive utilities workforce, military personnel, and friendly volunteers that descend upon communities in need of repair and help after storms of this magnitude. May God bless and protect them all! |
